The U.S. passport office stopped regular operations in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Since that time, the office continues to accept applications and it will cash your check immediately. However, you application just gets added to the backlog of millions of passport applications sitting and waiting to be processed.

The office is advising it plans to gradually reopen routine passport processing during the next several months. The office is so backed up it is not even able to provide any status update other than to advise it will safeguard your forms and the documents submitted with the application.
The office plans to open processing facilities in 3 phases which will result in a massive delay with application processing taking up to 6 or 8 months at a minimum. All applications will be processed on a first-in, first-out basis.
