“The Unvarnished Traveler” by Brian Raymond

For those of you planning travel to Honduras—whether for a luxurious Caribbean cruise or a resort getaway—there’s a notable update you’ll want to be aware of. Just last week, Honduras appeared ready to implement a new vaccination requirement for all travelers, mandating proof of measles (MMR) vaccination under Executive Decree No. 28-1-2025. This news created a ripple of concern among many of my clients, particularly those over 50 who were unsure if their childhood vaccinations still counted.
Now, we’ve received clear guidance: Honduras has rescinded this requirement.
What Changed?
Initial reports, based on Executive Decree No. 28-1-2025, suggested that as of July 7, 2025, all visitors to Honduras—regardless of age or nationality—would be required to present proof of measles and rubella vaccination. The announcement sparked confusion, especially among cruise passengers planning stops in Roatán or Mahogany Bay.
However, on July 4, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Honduras issued a public statement confirming that no vaccination proof is currently required for entry. According to their official message, travelers arriving in Honduras do not need to show documentation for measles or rubella vaccination.
That’s a definitive reversal from what was initially expected. While the Executive Decree was real, it appears the implementation has been paused, rescinded, or otherwise suspended.
What This Means for You
If you’re cruising, flying, or crossing into Honduras, here’s what you should know:
-
✅ You do not need to show proof of measles or rubella vaccination at the border or cruise terminal.
-
🚫 There is no MMR documentation requirement for entry into Honduras at this time.
-
🟡 The yellow fever vaccine is still required if you’re arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic—this has not changed.
-
⚠️ If you’re traveling with children or managing medical records, it’s always a good idea to carry documentation just in case policies shift again with short notice.
Why the Confusion?
Travel regulations can change quickly, and often without widespread official communication. In this case, it seems the decree either wasn’t implemented or was quietly repealed before enforcement began. Some tourism groups and local officials continued to cite the earlier requirement even after it was rescinded, leading to continued uncertainty.
In situations like this, I always look for direct guidance from embassies or government health authorities before advising my clients. The July 4 statement from the U.S. Embassy is our most reliable source at the moment, and it’s good news: you can travel to Honduras without needing to show proof of MMR vaccination.
Travel Tips Moving Forward
-
If you’re over 45 and haven’t had a recent MMR booster, this is still a good reminder to review your immunization records with your doctor. Even though Honduras is not requiring it now, measles outbreaks can happen anywhere.

Stay informed by checking travel advisories and embassy updates close to your departure date.

Final Thought
Travel rules evolve—and sometimes reverse—quickly. If you’ve read otherwise online, know that as of today, there is no MMR vaccine requirement to enter Honduras. I’ll continue monitoring for updates and keep you posted if anything changes.
Safe and healthy travels to you.
